At 2:50 AM on December 17, 2024, the Long March 2D launch vehicle successfully launched from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, placing the Aerospace Hongtu PIESAT-2 09-12 satellite into its destination orbit, signaling a complete success of the launch mission.
The Long March 2D launch vehicle that carried out this mission is a level 2 carrier rocket with liquid propellant of normal temperature developed by the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology. It has the characteristics of high reliability, good economic efficiency, and strong adaptability, and can meet the requirements of a variety of missions, including launching single satellites, multiple satellites in parallel or tandem, and piggyback launches. It has a payload capacity of up to 1.3 tons for deploying satellites into a 700-kilometer sun-synchronous orbit.
In December, temperatures at the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center dropped dramatically, and the historical temperatures at the launch window almost reached the lowest launch conditions. Based on previous low-temperature support measures, the test team, with full support and close cooperation from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, carefully reviewed and refined the measures, paying close attention to details to ensure the smooth execution of the launch mission.
The launch vehicle features a “two high, two low” split-level layout. Although this layout has been used in several previous launches, the test team insisted on thorough advance planning and conducted a full-process simulation and docking test before entering the site to address the specific requirements of different satellite missions. After arriving at the launch site, they had extensive communication with the satellite team, recorded the entire process, and confirmed the project details through work sheets, ensuring the successful completion of the launch.
This mission is the first to use the Ф3800 composite material satellite fairing designed by Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology uniformly for carrier rockets. This fairing is compatible with various models, including CZ-6C, CZ-6A, CZ-4B/4C, and CZ-2D. Made of fully RF transparent materials, the composite material satellite fairing can meet satellite measurement needs, offer more envelope space, and provide additional launch options for the expanding commercial space market.
This launch mission is the 94th launch of the Long March 2D launch vehicle, the 227th launch of the Long March series of launch vehicles developed by Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, and the 553rd launch of the Long March series of launch vehicles.
