At 12:11 PM on March 15, 2025, the Long March 2D launch vehicle was successfully launched with the Siwei Gaojing-3 02 and Tianyan-23 satellites from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, precisely delivering them into their destination orbits, signaling a complete success of the launch mission. Both the satellites and launch vehicle were developed by Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology.
Firmly establishing a life-cycle management philosophy, the test team of Long March 2D launch vehicle continually implemented detailed measures and thorough quality checks to ensure a successful launch by maintaining constant vigilance and leaving nothing to chance throughout the mission. For the first time, the launch vehicle adopted the range-based fairing jettisoning technology, which reduces the longitudinal range of the impact area by approximately 20 kilometers compared to the previously used timed fairing jettisoning technology. This technological innovation has forged a powerful defense and ensured the safety of the impact area. This launch mission is the 96th launch of the Long March 2D launch vehicle, the 230th launch of the Long March series of launch vehicles developed by Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology, and the 564th launch of the Long March series of launch vehicles.
As the sister satellite to Siwei Gaojing-3 01, the successful launch of Siwei Gaojing-3 02 marks a new stage of enhanced operational capabilities for a new generation of commercial remote sensing satellite system in China. Operating in a 500-kilometer sun-synchronous orbit, Siwei Gaojing-3 02 satellite has the technical characteristics of high resolution and wide swath, high-precision positioning, intelligent and flexible operation, long lifespan and high reliability. Its performance indicators have reached a leading level in China’s commercial optical remote sensing satellite sector and are among the most advanced in the world. Once Siwei Gaojing-3 02 and 01 satellites are fully integrated into a network, they will form a more efficient and reliable system for coordinated operations. Its data acquisition capabilities will see a significant upgrade, shifting from annual coverage of key regions to semi-annual coverage of most areas across China, as well as quarterly and monthly coverage of major provinces and cities. This advancement will strengthen China’s satellite data acquisition and service capabilities, while also enhancing the country’s core competitiveness in the global commercial remote sensing sector.
